The Lat Pulldown is a popular strength training exercise that targets the upper back muscles, specifically the latissimus dorsi or “lats.” To perform this exercise, you use a pulldown machine and contract your back muscles to pull a weighted bar down towards your chest. The Lat Pulldown is an effective exercise for building back strength, increasing muscle mass, and improving overall upper body function. However, proper form and technique are essential to ensure maximum effectiveness and avoid injury. By following the steps outlined below, you can learn how to perform this exercise with proper form and technique.
How to perform Lat Pulldown
- Set the weight and leg brace on your Lat pulldown machine.
- Take a seat facing the machine, and tuck your hips in with the leg brace. Take a slightly wider than shoulder width, overhand grip with your arms extended towards the ceiling. This is your starting position.
- To begin, exhale and use your back and bicep muscles to pull the bar down towards your chest.
- Continue to pull the bar down until either your muscles are optimally contracted or it is in line with your chin.
- After a brief pause, inhale and return the bar back along the same path into its starting position.
- Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions.
